Regarding Geoff and Mundane SF ianmcdonald writes about 21st Century SF today, citing Cheryl Morgan in Emerald City: 21st Century SF, in contrast, will concentrate on the future after the fall of the American economic empire. It will often be set in former Communist countries, and in countries now regarded as "Third World" such as India and Brazil. The prevailing technology will be biological. Early examples of the sub-genre might be M. John Harrison’s Signs of Life, Geoff Ryman’s Air, and Ian McDonald’s River of Gods (not to mention the eagerly awaited Brasyl). | | Monday, May 15th, 2006 | 2:02 pm [jophan]

Martin Andreasson Fan Guest of Honor
Imagicon announces its fan guest of honor: Martin Andreasson. Martin, who has been active in Swedish fandom since the age of 14, accepted the invitation, "deeply moved and honored". Martin quickly became a prominent fan, was fan GoH at a convention the first time in 1985, won the Alvar award in 1988 (with his brother Malte) and issued many well-written fanzines during his first ten years in fandom (and the odd one after that as well). He is also a former chair of the Alvar Appeltofft Memorial Foundation. These days he is a member of the Swedish parliament. He is guaranteed to be a magnificent fan guest of honor! | 1:17 pm [jophan]

Son of Ferdinand Marcos big Haldeman fan
From an interview with Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr: "Unlike his father, he does not play golf and although he went on a skiing holiday abroad three years ago, Bongbong Marcos insists leisure for him means lounging at home and reading the life work of cult science fiction author Joe Haldeman." See philstar.com for the whole interview. It was brought to our notice by Mitch Wagner on sff.people.joe-haldeman. |
